Reconnect with Your Body: Effortless Movement & Dance for Seniors

Have you been looking for a way to move your body that feels nurturing rather than exhausting? Welcome to a dance class where there are no steps to memorize, no right or wrong ways to move, and absolutely no strain.

Our weekly sessions are designed specifically for seniors, focusing on the joy of effortless movement. We draw inspiration from gentle, deeply rooted Japanese somatic (body-mind) traditions to help you find fluidity, ease chronic tension, and rediscover the natural rhythm of your body.

Our Core Inspirations

Instead of traditional dance choreography, our classes explore three beautiful philosophies that treat the body with ultimate respect:

  • Noguchi Taiso (Moving Like Water): Developed by Michizo Noguchi, this practice views the human body as a "leather bag full of water." We learn to let go of unnecessary muscular effort, using gravity and weight to create fluid, wave-like movements that protect and soothe the joints.
  • Butoh-Inspired Expression: Butoh is a transformative dance form born in Japan that embraces the body exactly as it is. It invites us to dance from the inside out, turning our breath, memories, and simple images (like moving through thick air or feeling the wind) into deeply personal, expressive movement.
  • Noguchi Seitai Principles (Natural Alignment): Seitai translates to "properly ordered body." We integrate these concepts to encourage your body’s natural self-regulating abilities. Through gentle alignment and listening closely to your physical needs, we help restore balance and ease to your everyday posture.

What to Expect in Class

Every class is structured to be safe, welcoming, and entirely adaptable to your personal comfort level.

1.Gentle Awakening:10 Mins.

We begin with mindful breathing and gentle micro-movements, grounding ourselves and noticing where we are holding tension.

2.Exploring Weight & Gravity:20 Mins.

Using Noguchi Taiso concepts, we practice letting go. We experiment with floating, swaying, and letting gravity do the heavy lifting for our limbs.

3.Imaginative Dance:20 Mins.

Guided by soft music and poetic imagery, you will be invited to explore your own "free dance"—moving at whatever pace feels good to you, whether standing or seated.

4.Restorative Closing:10 Mins.

We wind down with calming movements based on Seitai principles to integrate the practice and leave you feeling balanced and refreshed.

A Note on Accessibility: No prior dance experience is required. Every element of this class can be modified. If you prefer or need to remain seated in a chair for the entire session, you can absolutely do so and still experience the full benefits of the practice.
